I bought this dish recently, the dealer told me that he had been told that is was a Scottish porridge dish and that the small receptacle on the side was used for keeping salt to be added to the porridge to the diners taste. I didn’t think that was right and can find nothing to back that up. On the back of the dish is imprinted is what appears to be Reg No 792191 but the last three numbers are indistinct and it could be other numbers. If this is the registered design number this dates this dish to 1933 or thereabouts because the sequence of design numbers for those years began 792.
